“When Somebody Loves You Back”- Teddy Pendergrass

“When Somebody Loves You Back” by Teddy Pendergrass (1978) is a mid tempo R&B song that features an elegant bass line and orchestration. The lyrics “It feels so good, loving somebody, when somebody loves you back” resonates throughout the song because it gives the song a loving type of vibe and Pendergrass’ voice adds on to the warm feeling that the song gives you. The mood of the song puts a person’s soul to ease, just because of how smooth it is. The title and how the song gives you the good feeling a person gets when they’re in love with somebody who loves them back. The song comes out of Teddy Pendergrass’ second album in 1978 titled, “Life Is A Song Worth Singing”, and the singles within the album were a hit success and turned Pendergrass into a male sex symbol.

Before breaking out into his solo career, Teddy Pendergrass (born Theodore Pendergrass) on March 26, 1950 grew up in the church and even became an ordained minister at the age of 10. In 1970, he was spotted by Harold Melvin and was asked to be the drummer for the group Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes and then later became the lead singer. It wasn’t until 1975 when Pendergrass decided to leave the group because of monetary issues. In 1982, Pendergrass was involved in a car accident, which left him paralyzed from the chest down. After his accident he still decided to record songs and perform at shows.

The song “When Somebody Loves You Back” was heavily sampled in the song “Feels Good” by rapper Cam’ron featuring Usher. The melody of the song is the same as the original as well as the chorus. Only addition onto the song is the rapping, which talks about a modern day relationship and the fact that the woman “holds” the man down no matter the circumstances
